Day Four - Now Onto Our Bungalow By The Sea

"If my dreams could all come true,
paradise would be in a bungalow by the sea."

Monday was the day we were to check into our beach house in Newport, but we had some time to kill before. It was just the right amount of time to sneak in any Portland experiences that we might have missed out on. We consulted our list of Portland Must-Do's. Ah yes, we hadn't gone to a farmer's market. What do you know, there happened to be a market at Pioneer Square that morning. Only in Oregon do they have a farmer's market nearly every day of the week.

We grabbed some fresh produce to enjoy at the beach house.

The berries were too beautiful to pass up. It's a good thing that we were parked close in an over-priced office building garage. Neil and Tony took our spoils to the vehicles so that we wouldn't have to carry them around with us.

Let's see, what else was on our list. Oh ya, we hadn't tried a delicious donut yet. Portland is known for its donut shops and treatoriums. Although VooDoo donuts gets all of the hype, we chose to venture over to Blue Star Donuts. The locals claim that this understated shop is truly where it's at when it comes to donut decadence. I generally don't argue with the locals, and how convenient that we were within walking distance of the place.

Can I just say that indulging in one of these morsels of goodness was like no other donut devouring experience I've ever had. I chose a beignet type donut filled with a lemon curd custard. Oh my! Heaven!

I don't know how on earth they kneaded the dough, but the consistency was dense yet fluffy. I can't even describe it. And it was not as sweet as your normal donut. I didn't have that sick bloated feeling that I normally get after pounding a greasy sugar-dense donut.

The crazy thing is that we didn't think to get a dozen donuts to go when we were finished. We each ate our one donut, complimented the staff, wiped the powdered sugar off our faces, then walked out the door, into our van, and drove 3 hours to the coast. What were we thinking!!! Here I was having an out of body blissful donut experience, and I was content to walk away never to enjoy another Blue Star Donut. I regret it to this day. And I regretted it the next day as I sat at our beach house with a major sweet tooth. A delicious donut sure would have been nice, but alas, who knows how long it will be before I experience another Blue Star Donut. Sigh. I can still taste it's lemony goodness. I can still feel its texture in my mouth. Sigh.

Even though we had just eaten a donut, we decided that we couldn't leave Portland without another go at the food carts.

We downed a couple more tacos, then hit the road. Next stop, the ocean!

Our bungalow by the sea was perched on a cliff in Newport, overlooking a most beautiful beach. It was less of a bungalow, and more of a luxurious beach house.

When Angie and I walked into this beautiful entertainment area, we couldn't help but giggle with delight. It's fun to pretend that your rich and that this is your normal life, if only for a week.

With a view like this and beach a mere tromp down the hill away, we saw no reason to leave. So we didn't. We stayed right here for the next day and a half, thus beginning the rest and relaxation portion of the trip.

Alright, Neil did leave the house once, to get us dinner. Our favorite Newport pizza from Savory. I love that certain things remain the same, like the beautiful Oregon beaches and the quaint Newport eateries. Though it had been four years since our last Oregon adventure, on this lovely cool evening, it felt like we had never left.
